How To Use

Births, Deaths, Migration: What Explains the Change?

Nothing is graded or saved automatically — take a screenshot or write down your answers before you close this page, since everything clears on refresh.

1The Puzzle

Pick a country. You'll see its raw annual figures — births, deaths, people who moved in, people who moved out — and the country's actual total population change. Choose a + or − for each number so your equation reaches that exact total. Explain your reasoning before you check.

2Formalize the Vocabulary

Once you solve it, the tool reveals the formal terms — Natural Increase, Net Migration, Total Population Change — mapped onto the equation you just built yourself.

3Compare Countries

Solve all four countries to build a comparison table and answer a reflection question about which countries rely on migration versus natural increase.

Solve All Four to Build This Table

Each country you solve above adds a row here — using the raw figures you already saw, type in the three numbers yourself (don't just copy the reveal above).

Formulas — copy these into your notes
Natural Increase  =  Births − Deaths
Net Migration  =  In-Migration − Out-Migration
Total Population Change  =  Natural Increase + Net Migration

Solve a country above to add it here.

Once you've checked your table, copy it — along with the three formulas above — into your notes. You'll need them for the next practice activity.

Which of these countries relies most on migration for its population change? Which relies most on natural increase? Which is shrinking, and why?
